Restored Sheaffer Balance 500 lever-filling fountain pen in Golden Brown Striated celluloid, dating to approximately the late 1930s to early 1940s.
The pen features gold-tone trim and a two-tone Sheaffer Feather Touch #5 nib. The barrel retains a crisp W.A. Sheaffer Pen Co., Fort Madison, Iowa, U.S.A. imprint, with the lighter “500” marking also still clearly visible.
The Feather Touch #5 nib writes approximately a medium line with a small amount of natural spring. The nib has been cleaned, adjusted, and writing-tested.
The lever-filling system has been fully serviced. The original ink sac was replaced with a new sac, while the original pressure bar was retained because it remained in good working and cosmetic condition.
Condition
The Golden Brown Striated celluloid has strong color and gloss. The clip, cap band, and lever present very well, and the primary barrel imprint remains crisp and clearly legible.
Restoration
The pen was fully disassembled, cleaned, and serviced. Old ink was removed from the nib, feed, and section. The Feather Touch #5 nib was cleaned, polished, adjusted, and tested. The original ink sac was replaced with a new sac. The original pressure bar was cleaned, inspected, and retained. The lever mechanism was cleaned and tested for proper operation. The barrel, cap, clip, cap band, and lever were carefully polished. Deeper barrel scratches were removed, and the remaining tooth mark was reduced while avoiding excessive removal of original material. The pen was reassembled, filled, leak-tested, and writing-tested following restoration.
Known Flaws
A faint remnant of a deeper tooth mark remains on the barrel and can be seen under close inspection. Light microscratching and other minor signs of age remain throughout the pen. This is a restored vintage fountain pen and should be expected to retain minor cosmetic evidence of its age and prior use.
