A restored Sheaffer Balance Lifetime Sovereign fountain pen from approximately 1940–1942, finished in rich Carmine Red Striated Celluloid with gold-tone trim and Sheaffer's distinctive White Dot.
This slender, full-length Balance features the original-style lever-filling mechanism, a translucent ink-view section, and a two-tone 14K Sheaffer Lifetime nib. The barrel retains a readable Fort Madison, Iowa imprint and the original 875 price marking, representing an $8.75 retail price.
The fine nib is a particularly enjoyable writer, producing a crisp line with noticeable spring and attractive line variation under controlled pressure. It is softer than many typical Sheaffer Lifetime nibs, though it should not be treated as an unrestricted flex nib.
The filling system has been serviced and passed its fill test. The nib has also been dip-tested, with a writing sample included in the photographs.
Condition
The Carmine Striated Celluloid retains vibrant color, attractive translucency, and strong surface gloss. The gold-tone clip, cap band, and lever present well, with ordinary vintage surface wear. The barrel imprint remains legible.
Restoration
The pen was disassembled and cleaned, including extensive work to remove old ink residue from the transparent ink-view section. The hardened original ink sac was removed during servicing, and the filling system was returned to operation. The pen was cleaned, polished, fill-tested, and dip-tested.
Known Flaws
Light age-related surface marks and trim wear remain. This is a restored vintage writing instrument, not a new or unused pen.
