Pen History

The Sheaffer Balance was one of the defining American fountain pen designs of the 1930s. Its streamlined, tapered shape was a departure from the flat-topped pens that dominated the previous decade.

This example is a full-size Sovereign Lifetime, produced around 1938–1942 in Golden Brown Striated celluloid. The alternating brown and golden stripes give the pen a distinctive appearance, particularly when the material catches the light.

The white dot identifies it as part of Sheaffer's Lifetime line, and the two-tone 14K Lifetime nib reflects the company's emphasis on durable, dependable writing instruments.

Nearly ninety years later, it's still an attractive pen, and its simple lever-filling mechanism makes it a practical vintage writer.

Restoration Story

Sometimes a boring restoration is exactly what I need.

This Sovereign was one of those pens that just cooperated. No surprises inside the barrel, no stubborn components refusing to come apart, and no significant cosmetic damage requiring hours of polishing.

The restoration was straightforward: clean the pen, polish the celluloid and trim, replace the ink sac, and make sure everything works as it should.

The only area that needed a little extra attention was the nib. It initially wrote a very fine line but had a narrow sweet spot that made the writing angle more demanding than I wanted. After two rounds of careful smoothing, the sweet spot was noticeably improved without sacrificing that extra-fine line.

The finished pen writes beautifully, and the golden-brown celluloid cleaned up particularly well.

There wasn't any dramatic repair or unusual problem to solve on this one. Just a well-made old fountain pen that needed routine service to get back into use.

After some of the more challenging restorations on the bench lately, I'll happily take one like this.
